with R = dW + WW . On the fermion ground state, it is generally taken from granted that the right hand side vanishes. The goal of this paper is to study this assumption in detail. Chern-Simons gravity was first introduced in [2] in three dimensions. It was then pointed out [1] that the same construction can be carried over to five dimensions. Poincare Chern-Simons supergravities were introduced in [3], and their anti-de Sitter extensions in [4]. It was conjectured in [4] and [5] that M-theory may be described by eleven-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity. This idea has recently been reexamined in [6]. A possible mechanism relating the field content of standard and Chern-Simons supergravities was discussed in [7]. The dynamical structure of higher dimensional Chern-Simons theories and their associated current algebras was studied in [8, 9, 10]. See also [11] for other aspects of higherdimensional Chern-Simons theories. Let us start by recalling the meaning of the ChernSimons level k and its relation to Planck’s scale. In the purely gravitational sector, the gauge fieldW is expanded as

Dynamical Mass Generation in QED3 with Chern–Simons Term

In (2+1)-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons term, we study dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry, using the Dyson–Schwinger equation for the fermions. There is a region in parameter space were dynamical chiral symmetry breaking occurs, just as in pure QED3 (without Chern–Simons term); outside this region, this chiral symmetry breaking solution does not exists. Our results, both numerically and...

2 Maxwell - Chern - Simons - Higgs Mechanism in the Schrödinger Representation

This paper discusses the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Schrödinger representation formulation of quantum field theory. The analysis is presented for three-dimensional space-time abelian gauge theories with either Maxwell, Maxwell-Chern-Simons, or pure Chern-Simons terms as the gauge field contribution to the action, each of which leads to a different form of mass generation...

Dimensional transmutation and symmetry breaking in Maxwell-Chern-Simons scalar QED

The mechanism of dimensional transmutation is discussed in the context of Maxwell-Chern-Simons scalar QED. The method used is non-perturbative. The effective potential describes a broken symmetry state. It is found that the symmetry breaking vacuum is more stable when the Chern-Simons mass is different from zero. Dynamical Generation of Fermion Mass and Magnetic Field in Three-Dimensional QED with Chern-Simons Term

We study dynamical symmetry breaking in three-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons (CS) term, considering the screening effect ofN flavor fermions. We find a new phase of the vacuum, in which both the fermion mass and a magnetic field are dynamically generated, when the coefficient of the CS term κ equals Ne/4π. The resultant vacuum becomes the finite-density state halffilled by fermions. For κ ...
